Going Bananas!

Since everyone enjoyed yesterday’s post on apples I thought I woudl stick with that theme and move on to my second favorite fruit…the banana!

The banana is a fruit that is mostly sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose) and fiber. So it is perfect for an immediate source of energy. Bananas also can help in the following ways:

• Constipation: bananas have a high fiber content which helps restore normal bowel function. They also contain soluble fiber, pectin, which can help normalize movement through the digestive tract.

• Healthy Bones: bananas are an exceptionally rich source of fructooligosaccharide, a compound that nourishes probiotic (friendly) bacteria in the colon. As the probiotic bacteria increases it helps our body’s ability to absorb calcium.

• Blood Pressure: bananas are extremely high in potassium AND yet very low in sodium, therefore having a perfect ratio for preventing high blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration have just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

• Heartburn: bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana before reaching for the Tums.

• Smoking: bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. They contain vitamins B6 and B12 they contain, as well as potassium and magnesium: these substances have shown to help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

• Nerves: bananas are high in B vitamins that have been shows to improve nerve function

• Mosquito Bites: many people report that rubbing the inside of a banana peel on a mosquito bite is very effective in reducing itching and swelling

• Stress Relief: bananas are high in potassium, which helps normalize the heartbeat and regulate the body’s water balance. During periods of high stress, our body’s potassium levels tend to be rapidly depleted: eating bananas is a healthy way to rebalance.

BUYING AND STORING BANANAS

Bananas should be slightly firm and bright in appearance and you should avoid bananas that are bruised or do not have stems attached. Since bananas ripen quickly at room temperature, it is best to buy bananas when they are still slightly green depending on how soon you are going to need them. To speed up the ripening process you can place them in a paper or plastic bag. Do not store unripe (greener) bananas in the refrigerator because cold temperatures prevent bananas from ripening. However, once your bananas have reached your desired level of ripeness, they can be stored in the refrigerator. When stored in the refrigerator, the skins of bananas will turn darker but the flesh will not affected. Bananas can also be frozen for up to two months. Simply remove the peel and wrap in plastic wrap before freezing.

COOKING TIPS

Green tipped bananas are good to cook.

Yellow bananas are best eaten raw.

Brown specked bananas taste best when baked with bread, muffins or cookies.

Do you like bananas? What is your favorite way to eat them?

My favorite way to eat them is when they’re really speckly. The riper the better!

  2. Good to learn some interesting facts about one of my favorite foods! My favorite way to eat bananas is on top of waffles and peanut butter with a little bit of syrup! 🙂

  3. I like bananas but I’m super quirky about eating them- they have to be turning brown & I can’t bite into them- I have to use a knife. Haha.

And yes, I’m going to HLS!!! I’m SO glad you’re going- I can’t wait to meet you!!!!

  4. I love ’em any which way! Yum, yum, yum! I’ve been wanting to try freezing them, I’ve heard they’re awesome that way.

  5. Bananas are one food I do NOT like. I’m always happy when they turn, because that means banana bread. I’ve just never found them sexy; i’m much more a vegg head

  6. Ok, I have a very embarassing, but pretty funny story about bananas and constipation! 😉 When I was 3 or 4 I was constipated for the first time and was staying with my aunt. I wanted to poop so bad and was miserably waiting on the toilet. My aunt told me I should start eating more bananas, so as I was sitting on the toilet I pleadingly said, “Can you pllleeeeease get me a banana RIGHT NOW?!?!?!?!” hahahahaha!! Sorry if that grossed you out!! I really know how to add some class to the comment section, don’t I?! 😉

  7. I love bananas! A little brown are the best for me. A great way to eat them is to slice them to two and put cinammon and a little bit sugar on top, then to own. When they are ready add some vanilla ice cream, yum! Ah and use brown bananas.

  8. Bananas are my favorite! I freeze them for smoothies, try to eat them raw when they are green. I’ve heard the riper they are, the more sugar in them? The best part is how filling they are.

  9. I love bananas. They are in my normal rotation of AM snacks.

  10. I loooooove bananas. I like eating them plain for a snack, sliced up with peanut butter or almond butter for a pre or post workout snack, or frozen into smoothies. My favorite way to eat them is banana ice cream where you just puree them in a food processor until they turn into ice cream! Yum!

  11. I’m definitely a banana lover! One of my favorite ways to enjoy one is to make a banana hot dog using a whole wheat hot dog bun smeared with peanut butter. YUM!

  12. Bananas are my favorite fruit! Put a slathering of PB on them and I am good to go 😉

  13. Bananas are my life. We don’t have any right now and it’s seriously disturbing me. 😛

My favorite way is with a spoonful of peanut butter. Bite banana, lick spoon, eat, repeat.

As for the Next FN Star thing… I keep being told that I’d be good on that show but I really wouldn’t. I can’t cook well under pressure, I’m bad in front of cameras and I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to take Bobby Flay telling me he didn’t particularly enjoy my dish. 😉 But thank you! 🙂

  14. I don’t like eating them on their own but I LOVE LOVE LOVE baking with them! Great blog!

I like my bananas just by themselves or slathered with some peanut butter.

  23. I love bananas!! I never knew they help build healthy bones or provide mosquito bite relief (I swear by rubbing alcohol). I love the fridge technique. They stay good in there for a really long time!

I like them cooked into my oatmeal, topped with PB, or blended into a chocolate smoothie (I slice some and keep in the freezer for smoothies). They’re such a perfect snack to take along somewhere too because they’re already wrapped!

  24. I eat a banana as a part of my breakfast every morning as a part of my “normal” routine. This morning for breakfast, however, I got a little daring and sliced up the banana, mixed it with rolled oats, crushed pecans, almond slices, ground flaxseed, and vanilla almond milk and baked it. Holy deliciousness!

  25. I love to eat bananas with peanut butter 🙂 I also like to eat them diced, with diced strawberries, greek yogurt and splenda!

  26. Oh my gosh I LOVE bananas…I think I’m going to turn IN to a banana…love them for breakfast in any form…in oatmeal, sliced on top of PB…YUMMM! 😛

  27. Now we’re onto my fruit. I eat a banana pretty much every day. They can fill me up as a snack or pre-workout snack.

Just made banana bread tonight, too!

    I eat them plain.

  28. Now bananas, I love. I eat them as brown as they can get. The mushier and riper, the better. My old college roommates only ate them green, and they’d give them to me after they were too ripe. I always had bananas, but never had to by them.

  29. I looooove bananas. If I’m just going to eat one plain I love it a little on the green side, but for cooking, in my smoothies, and in my oats I like them a little brown!

  30. I definitely am a banana lover but used to only eat them when they were slightly green. Now I can do the more ripe ones in oats or mashed for a topping. I love them with some nut butter…so good! Thanks for all the banana info…so interesting!

  31. Apples and bananas are such versatile, reliable fruits! I love bananas with peanut butter on toast, in my oatmeal, or eaten raw. So tasty! They are also a great addition to smoothies.

  32. I just learned to put bananas in the fridge and even though the skin darkens the fruit itself is fine! That’s a good piece of info!

  33. On a typical day I have two bananas a day. 🙂 One in my oats and a frozen one for smoothies. I love bananas! My fave way though is banana ice cream!
