Have a little FAT with that!

So I was reading in my Women’s Health Magazine and I saw this health tip that I felt was worth repeating!

EMBRACE A (LITTLE) FAT: Trimming all the fat from your diet can backfire. Oleic acid, an unsaturated fat found in olive oil, nuts, and avocados, helps squash hunger. During digestion, its converted into a compound that indirectly triggers hunger-curbing signals to your brain. Just watch your portions!! Unsaturated fats should make up no more than 20% of your total calorie intake.

I think this one is SO important because all too often I feel like people cut out ALL fats from their diet in an effort to lose weight! No good people…enjoy a little fat!! Healthy serving sizes would be two tablespoons of nut butter, an ounce of nuts, or a quarter of avocado. There is nothing wrong with adding a little fat to your diet. Extreme low-fat diets are only setting you up for failure or a binge! Your body needs necessary fats to function. It is good for your nails, skin and hair. Have a little stubborn belly bulge? Try adding in some good fats!

What is your favorite healthy fat?

Mine is hands down…nut butter! I love almond butter! Love it! I also really like to make my own trail mix with almonds and raisins! So good!

  1. definitely nut butters and/or olive oil (which I couldn’t cook without!) i would say avocados, but i like guac a LOT and that comes with chips & some not-so-healthy fat there 🙂

  2. I don’t think I could pick a favorite. I just can’t eat a meal without fat or I feel empty. My list would include:
    nut butters
    grass-fed beef
    organic dairy
    olive oil
    coconut milk/oil

  3. I really love nut butter as well. I make my own almond butter and I love it…but def prob eat more than I should haha. I also have quite an obsession with avocados!

  4. I think it’d be no surprise if I said nut butters… I get probably more than I should on a weekly basis… 😉

  5. I agree with you and have made a conscious effort to make sure I add in healthy fats. I was cutting out fats without realizing it – not trying to be fat free, just thought I was cooking cleaner. I love peanut and almond butters. YUM

  6. This is so, so true!! I went on a very low fat diet and lost a lot of weight, but was miserable and hungry all the time. And surprise, surprise I eventually gained the weight back. I love olive oil. My favorite thing ever is to get some yummy bread and dip it in olive oil. Soooooo wonderful!! 🙂

  7. Can’t burn fat if you don’t eat fat!! I love guacamole. That’s my favorite “fat”. 😉

  8. Mine is peanut butter but unfortunately I don’t get to have it very often b/c of my dear daughter’s allergies BUT I’d have to say avacado is probably a close runner up. I do enjoy other nut butters but somehow they are just not as good to me as peanut butter! It’s probably a mental thing b/c pb is taboo for me! 😉

  9. Nut butters are the sure winner for me! I do use olive oil in cooking, though….and I dip hunks of bread in it at restaurants!

  10. i think i eat too much fat…seriously 🙂
nuts, nut butters, avocados, oils, fatty fish/meat products, cheese, yogurt, plus the not so healthy ones! too many to list!

  11. definitely nut butters! but also avocados and some evoo 🙂

  12. Almond butter! Or avocados!

  13. Almond butter for sure!!! It’s one thing I never get tired of and I’m always in the mood for!

  14. Mine is hands down avocados! Yum SO good!

  15. I’ll admit, right now I’m on a pretty low fat diet to tone and lean out but I do still eat lots of dry roasted peanuts, low fat cottage cheese and pistachios. I have tuna too in salads and I am out of guac now but that should be making a reappearance soon 🙂

  16. Good little post! The low fat way of life was promoted for soooo long and more and more evidence about fat being okay keeps coming out. More importantly than losing weight, tons of nutrients are must more digestible with fat! I’m not sure I can pick a favorite… but I probably use almond butter or olive oil the most.

  17. Peanut butter for sure! I like the other butters but there is something about PB.

    • I go back and forth between peanut butter and almond butter. Cashews are my favorite nut but for some reason I don’t like cashew butter at all!

  18. LOVE THIS!! i LOVE PB!!! for real. i am obsessed. its bad

  19. I love avocados and mixed nuts! mmm:)

  20. Its really a tie between nut butter and avocado. I think taste wise, I’d go wtih avocado, but you can’t eat it plain on a spoon like you can with nut butters!

    • Keith would totally beg to differ! I can’t tell you how many times I have seen that boy cut one open and go t it with a spoon. haha!

  21. I’d have to go with olive oil. I eat too many salads not too get fat from that.

The other thing with low-fat diets is that they’re usually pretty bland so we never hit that satiety point. And that means we always feel the need to keep eating to be satisfied.

  22. Peanut butter. Hands-down. Words cannot describe how much I love peanut butter. ❤

A close second is olive oil. I don't cook with it because all its healthfulness goes down the drain once it's exposed to heat and I never notice the difference when I do cook with it (baking is a different matter), but I love dressing things like pasta salad with it, and I air-pop popcorn and add some EVOO instead of butter.

My approach to fats is to try to eat most of it straight from its source – nuts, fatty legumes, grains, seeds, organic meat… I certainly don't eat a low-fat diet, but I do cook and bake with minimal fat because I think it's a waste to use a cup of butter or even oil in a quick bread recipe when I could get good fats from licking peanut butter off a spoon. 😛

  23. Avacado Baby!

  24. This one is so smart! I have to admit that I did fall victim to the fat free craze back then, but my tune has totally changed! I sweat I feel better with healthy fats! Definitely nut butters…I miss my almond butter…note to self…get more now!

  25. Oh! Avocados, peanut butter, eggs (sometimes) and olive oil. They must be eaten all mashed up together though. I kid.

  26. We are a peanut free home because DD is allergic or else I would say peanuts and peanut butter (they are my fave). But I use olive oil in my cooking and soy butter. I also eat almonds everyday….the good fat should defiantely stay in everyones diet, in moderation ofcourse!

  27. I really feel like in the past year I have embraced more healthy fats. I always loved avocados but I basically stayed away from pb and oils. Now I LOVE enjoying some pb and am not afraid to stir fry or cook in some olive oil!

  28. i have started doing this and have had success! i am definately a fat fan. i feel more full when i eat it.

my favorite sources are avocado and peanut butter 🙂

  29. I love nut butters. Peanut butter especially. And avocado. Oh, and cheese. Does cheese count?

  30. Peanut.Butter.

Avocados are pretty great as well. But I definitely agree about squashing hunger with fat. I love eating nuts for an afternoon snack. They keep me full for hours.

  31. It took me way too long to figure out that I need to eat fat! I love avocadoes now and I am making up for lost time.

  32. Nut butters and avocado, hands down 😉

  33. Thahini!

  34. A couple summers ago I was working a lot of hours and studying for tests to get into my PhD program. My running pretty much stopped. I was trying to eat healthy since I wasn’t working out as much. In the past I had avoided food with fat, but that summer I started eating more almonds and other healthy fats. I actually noticed more definition in my abs after adding more fat to my diet. That was when I really realized a balanced diet is very important.

  35. It’s a toss up between cheese and avocado! Yum! 🙂

  36. well you know mine is avocado!

  37. definitely nut butters!! 🙂

  38. MMM love nut butters! Though avacados are a close second 🙂

  39. Nut buttah for sure & AVOCADO!

  40. Thank you for posting this.

I think women get too caught up in the low fat/no fat lifestyle. I might copy and paste your info and e-mail it to a friend that I’m particularly concerned about.

I know I get enough fat….love my nut butters and guacamole!
