PT Tuesday

Happy Tuesday bloggies! I am REALLY starting to like my Tuesdays and Thursdays? Why? Because I have PT sessions at 1:00p.m. Even though they hurt like HELL (yes hell…no exaggeration) I like being able to physically feel my progress. It gives me hope. While my groin does feel a lot better my knee is still pulling pretty badly. But that’s okay. I am REFUSING to be in bad mood. REFUSING! I am taking it day by day and today I am just going to focus my therapy session! 🙂

I did have a good workout this morning. I ellipticaled 10 miles. WOWERS! It was tough, kind of fun, and a little gratifying! hehe! The things that make me happy…I bet if you polled most people ellipticalling 10 miles wouldn’t be on the top of the list! What can I say…I am a freak! But I am okay with it…truly I am. Thanks for everyone who is giving me encouragement on my “no run” gag order. I am definitely finding new things to do! I am currently contemplating this beauty: The AquaJogger.

What are your thoughts on the AquaJogger?

Yesterday, Tina asked what our Monday mini goals were. Mine is to CLEAN MY HOUSE! I know this sounds easy but really there is nothing I HATE more than cleaning. But I figured if I broke it up everyday then by Friday I would have a completely clean house. So yesterday…I cleaned (scrubbed) my kitchen and mopped. So here’s the thing: NOTE TO HOME BUILDERS: Putting in a stark white tile floor in the kitchen is not cool. Not cool at all. Okay I feel a lot better!

What is your least favorite cleaning job to do?

Lastly, I made another rendition of my steel-cut oats. I usually make a big batch once a week for Keith and I to eat on all week. This week’s edition was apple pie steel cuts!

APPLE PIE STEEL CUT OATS

  • 1 cup steel-cut oats
  • 4 1/2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, not packed
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 Tbsp. apple pie spice
  • 1 apple, chopped

Add everything, except apple, into crockpot. Cook on High for 4-5 hours, stirring often. Once finished stir in chopped fresh apple and tada…apple pie oats! Makes: 6 cups (Keith and I usually get 8 servings out of this)

Holy Crap...these literally taste like apple pie!!!

So good!!!

What is your favorite oatmeal add-in?

51 Responses

  1. Banana soft serve! I do it every morning – hot oats, cold banana soft serve. The mix is so delicious!

  2. Your oatmeal sounds yummy. I’m going to have to try it! My favorite add-ins are unsweetened coconut and dried cranberries.

  3. Hey Kelly!
I have my first PT appointment today for my ankle. Can’t wait. Just means I’m 2 weeks away (hopefully) from being able to run again. I went to spin class yesterday and after 4 weeks of not running now, I thought I was going to die on that bike! My cardio fitness level has dropped so much. I’m sick about it. I am getting very cranky!! I want to run soooooo bad, but I know I have to wait it out or I’ll do more damage than good. Glad you are finding other things to do. I’ve tried them all, but NOTHING gives me that high. I’m a freak too I guess! LOL! 🙂

My biggest problem is when I don’t run, I eat. NOT a good combination!!! I’m still taking in as many calories as I was when I was clocking 40 miles a week and it shows on the scale. That makes it even more depressing…

    • Goodluck at PT today…we can be in pain together! haha! No…really I know the pain is all worth it! I agree that nothing gives me the high like running does either but I trying really hard to stay postivie and focused!!! You will get there too…hang in there…SMILE…and keep me posted! 🙂

  4. Those oats look so great and I can just imagine how good they smell.

You had me laughing about the kitchen floor! Our kitchen floor is white tile also!!!!!! And it drives me crrrrrazy. We have 2 dogs who are in and out all day and they track in the Georgia red clay we have here. Ugh, so constantly having to wipe up reddish orangish paw prints all day!!

Have a wonderful Tuesday, Kelly! 🙂

    • I know…seriously…whoever though white tile in a kitchen was a good idea…I really want to meet that man. And yes…it had to be a man because a woman would NEVER do that to herself! haha! 🙂

  5. Ah, the little things. With my injury, I get excited if I can go into the grocery store for a bit. My dream is to do an entire grocery shopping trip on my own. Lame-o I know.

So funny you mention about cleaning. That’s what I blogged about today, too. Only I love to clean. Anything, really, though dusting is my least favorite.

  6. 10 miles?! I do 2, normally. We can’t all have your energy, I guess. 😛

Cleaning the kitchen floor is my least favorite part of cleaning. And we’ve got the kind of tile that’s really just plastic, but it’s textured because I guess they wanted it to feel like stone or something, but that just means that not only are there already grooves surrounding each tile for dirt to get trapped in, there’s also thousands of little grooves in each tile that attract dirt like no other. Mopping never does much. You really have to get on your hands and knees and scrub. Bleh.

You are too creative when it comes to oatmeal… I seriously either eat oats plain or just with a spoonful of peanut butter 99% of the time.

  7. I have never heard of the aqua jogger, but when I was doing PT (which was when I was 14) I did a lot of work on the water treadmill, which was really stinking fun. It was hard, since I was running, but good for my knee since it was in water. I had a blast with it

  8. Omg 10 miles on the elliptical would kill me. My feet fall asleep after like 3! I hate all cleaning, hehe.

  9. Oh I have to try the apple…..looks yummy! I love strawberry and blueberries with cinnamon, maple syrup and chia seeds in my oatmeal! Great start to a morning!

  10. Way to go on attacking the white floors! he he… I hit my least favorite cleaning task, too- the bathroom. Blah! But at least I got it out of the way…

  11. I hear you on the PT hurting. It’s worth it in the end though. I am not a big fan of cleaning either. I know some people really enjoy it though. My least favorite task is putting away the laundry.

  12. I actually used something like that when I went through my PT and I liked it a lot! My biggest problem with it was I got really bored, so you’d need to bring speakers or get a waterproof case for your iPod.

    • Agree! That is what I don’t like about swimming laps. But if I got an aquajogger I could use my Dad’s pool and blare the radio on the side.

  13. Hey Kelly, quick note of caution for the elliptical. I know everyone says elliptical machines are SO great because they are low-impact. However, they tend to “track” your legs. In other words, your legs (and arms) make the same exact motion over and over (for 10 miles) and that causes wear on specific muscles/tendons. When you run, every footstep is slightly different – especially if you run outside. If you do the same motion over and over, you’ll have a tendancy toward injury. Do your feet ever fall asleep while you’re ellipticalling? If so, that’s a sign that it might be causing you more problems. They are especially rough on the knees. Not a lot of drs/therapists are aware of this problem – that’s why they always tell people to use the elliptical. They are beneficial machines but I don’t think they are meant to be used for more than about 30 minutes or so. Just something to think about…

    • Well shit!

      • HAHHAHAH – I’m only laughing because that’s a funny response. I can relate to your pain! Plus, I used to LOVE ellipticalling but then my fiance explained the problems with it. If you really think about it, the tracking thing makes sense. He’s a chiropractor and he has seen lots of injuries from that repetitive motion.

I think you’re handling your injury really well…I know how terrible it feels being injured. Just be careful with your exercising while you’re healing. Swimming is probably the best thing for you now. And running in the pool. I’ve heard of Olympic athletes who run in the pool for months during an injury and come back even stronger!

Look at it this way, do you want to take a few weeks off now and really heal? Or, do you want to keep working out and take 3-4 months to heal? Your body is in your hands. You have to respect the run – it’s a powerful beast. Running is one of the best forms of exercise but it’s also one of the worse. You have to respect its power!

      • No I agree! I definitely want to honor my body and as weird as it sounds respect my injury. I am going to stick to swimming and water running. I am going to buy the Aquajogger this weekend probably and start water running. Thank you for the information….truly. I will stick to no more than 30 minutes on the elliptical a few times a week from now on! I appreciate it. Truthfully, I am just sad….

  14. i hate cleaning the bathroom! it’s just gross. i’m not even a gross person but ewwww why does my bathroom have so much hair on the floor! sick!!! hair off the body is vile.

  15. AGH cleaning floors can be a jerk because its a mutli-step, sweep then polish, process. Plus my dog sheds like a dern Christmas tree.

The Aquajogger looks like an infomercial, but I am dying to hear how you like it.

I love sprinkling in something crunch like almonds or cereal in my oatmeal. Breakfast is the best!

Have fun at PT – kill it!

  16. I have a grey floor in my kitchen, and I can’t keep it clean to save my life. I can only imagine how hard white would be! Seriously, I used to think my mom was exaggerating, but I make such a mess when I’m cooking. I drop bits of everything all over the floor. I HATE cleaning up after I’ve been cooking.

  17. Your oatmeal looks delicious! I am going to have to make try this recipe one of these days.

My least favorite thing to clean is the bathroom! I hate it!!

    Good luck with PT today.

  18. I ran in the pool yesterday. It was hard as heck! It still kind of hurt my knee though.

I like my oats plain, maybe just with cinnamon or a nuked apple.

  19. Oh YUM! This oatmeal recipe looks delicious. I might have to try this one out tomorrow

  20. Your positivity is so inspiring! I’m so glad PT is going well! I’m with you on the floor, mine isn’t even white white but it’s so hard to keep it spotless!

  21. My favorite thing to add to oatmeal is almond or soy milk…I love the creaminess! 🙂

As for cleaning I really dislike putting my laundry away! booo!

Have a great day and a good PT appointment!

  22. i hate cleaning the bathroom…probably the worst job ever. and that’s not because i find it gross, it’s just so tedious!

  23. I love trying all kinds of oaty combos but my #1 fave is coconut, dried cranberries, chocolate chips and a pb spoon. Wouldn’t mind eating it every day!

  24. Kelly… you are definitely a pool RUNNER, not an aqua JOGGER. 😀 Read my post!! My coach had me aqua jogging *every day* with no fail when I was injured. AND I have tons of workouts for you to keep you distracted!! EMMAILL MEE!!

    http://www.drtrirunner.com/2008/12/i-pool-run-aqua-jogging-not-allowed/

Sending one big ol’ healing hug your way!!

    • Okay I just emailed you!!! Thank you SO much! That helped a ton! I think I may have even cracked a smile…that is sayig A LOT! Thanks Erika!

  25. i love how postive you are about your PT! you have the best attitude. keep it up…..oh i love to add almond butter-the best!

  26. Washing the kitchen floor, scrubbing the top of the stove, and cleaning the toilet are my least favorites! YUCK!
My favorite oat add-ins would have to be raisins and cinnamon…but once fall rolls around, PUMPKIN is the star ingredient! 🙂

    • Oh I hate cleaning the stove too! We have one of those flat ranges and it is such a pain to clean! Plus it means we have an electric stove! Boo…wish we had gas!

  27. YOU GO GIRL with your 10 mile elliptical workout!!! Props to you 😀
Love all of your oatmeal creations- I’m going to have to make one- definitely liking the blueberry one …especially since they are in season right now. My favorite mix in is probably bananas…or peanut butter..actually both!! 😉

  28. Good to hear you being so positive I am so proud of you girl! I have been using aguajogger a lot since my injury, it’s great! Running in water is tuff business 🙂 Lot’s of love to you! I am having a good day too, living with an injury is life too and as long as we can do some exercise we should be happy 🙂

  29. Ooh, that oatmeal looks good. I am not really an oatmeal person but I want to be! I’ll have to try it.

I hate putting the laundry away.

  30. What do your PT sessions involve? Your enthusiasm and resiliency during this difficult time is admirable.
Oh – I must find Apple Pie Spice!! I’ve only had the Pumpkin…I didn’t know it existed!

Fav oatmeal add -in? What isn’t?! Almond butter – or any nut butter 🙂 -, RAISINS definitely, cinnamon for sure, blueberries, dried cranberries….

I hate cleaning the bathroom 😦

    • My PT does a lot of work on my IT and my groin. He is working the muscle fibers and really trying to break up built up scar tissue. It hurts really badly and I am usually very bruised after it is over. Blood vessels get broken and I am usually very swollen. But it is all for the good of my health, right? haha!

OMG…Jenn…applepie spice is AWESOME! You have to find it…these oats literally taste like apple pie! So good!

  31. Least fav. cleaning job: the bathroom!
Best add in to oatmeal: cinnamon + almond butter

  32. I’ve done so much pool running with those aqua jogger belts…when injured in high school it helped the most due to stress fractures. It was pretty hard actually after a while!

I really dislike cleaning the bathroom…no fun.

    the oats look great lady.

  33. I HATE toilets. Anything to do with toilets. EW! And clearing the hair stuck in the drain and stuff like that.

My favorite oatmeal add-in is roasted almonds! 🙂

  34. I hate cleaning as well. My husband has a hint of OCD though and hates a dirty house. So we end up cleaning more often than I’d like. What I hate the most – the bathroom! Specifically the toilet. But OCD hubby also won’t even TOUCH the bathroom. In the 4.5 years we’ve been together, he has cleaned it ONCE. GRrrr!

  35. I HATE cleaning the bathroom. Ew, Ew, Ew!
My fav oatmeal add in is lots and LOTS of milk!

  36. So you know we just got the puppy. She’s a rather clean dog, but her hair is now EVERYWHERE! I’m not the tidiest person, so I have to step up my game so that my mess isn’t competing with her mess!

I guess my least favorite would be the shower, because it’s just so darn big. And I don’t know how to do it well (without getting soaked in the process).

  37. I don’t eat oatmeal that often but when I do I love any kind of dried fruit like raisins or cranberries added in.

  38. 10 miles on the elliptical! Yowza! Keep up the great work!

I am the worst about putting clothes away. They get folded, stacked any reworn…rarely making it back to the closet or dresser…lots of clutter! I need to get better about that.

  39. I hope PT went well today. I’ve never thought about Monday goals. I guess it would be to start the week off with a good workout and make sure my fridge is stocked with fresh veggies!

  40. Too funny…I was just reading online yesterday about runner’s injuries and how runner’s won’t stop exercising no matter what happens to us. The answer? Aqua jogging (or running). If you do it, write a post and let us know what you think.

  41. Jogging and running in water totally saved my knees and made them stronger.
